Our Fabric

All Ceremony styles use a luxurious Lenzing Micro Modal, Alginate and Spandex blend. Finding the perfect fabric for Ceremony took many (many!) years. Through nearly 20 years designing and developing lingerie, we have felt and considered thousands of fabrics from around the world. We patiently waited until the perfect one came into our orbit, one that is truly unique.

It is silky soft, breathable, cool to the touch and gently hugs the body without restricting. It stands up to daily wear and washing without stretching, sagging or degrading. The components have minimal environmental impact, and are kind to your skin.

Lenzing Micro Modal

The Mother of the Woods: The Beech Tree conditions the soil in which it grows, improving structure, retaining water, supporting the ecosystems of the trees beside it. They require no irrigation and no pesticides. Beech not only self propagates through its seeds, which also provide a vital, high-energy food source for a wide range of woodland animals, but the mother Beech tree is able to produce young saplings as suckers growing from its roots. These saplings are then nurtured through a mycorrhizal network of fungi growing symbiotically amongst the roots of the mother. Despite the dominance of a single tree species, the beech forest is the preferred habitat of many thousands of species of flora, fauna, and fungi.

Lenzing modal is extracted from beech forests in Austria and its neighbouring countries. In all countries where Lenzing sources its wood, reforestation exceeds the quantities harvested by a third. All wood harvested by Lenzing is FSC certified, meaning that trees are harvested responsibly so there is no net loss of forest over time, forests with irreplaceable values, such as old-growth forests, are identified and maintained, all workers are provided with proper training, adequate safety protocols, and fair wages, plant and animal species are protected and local communities living in and around forest areas are consulted, and their legal and cultural rights to land and forest resources are respected.

The wood is reduced to pulp, then dissolved and spun into a cellulosic fibre that is 0.8 dtex, finer than cotton. Lenzing generates their modal fibres in a closed loop system, while generating much of its own energy. The entire process uses up to 20 times less water than cotton production. The fibre is biodegradable and compostable in industrial and home composting systems. It is a fiber that softens with washing rather than degrading, making it the ideal choice for garments worn so close to the body.

Alginate

Alginate begins in the ocean. It is a natural polysaccharide found in the cell walls of brown seaweed, it regulates water content and gives the seaweed tissue its structural strength and flexibility. The seaweed uses it to manage its own relationship with water. That function does not disappear when it becomes a fibre. It continues, in a different form, against skin.

Brown seaweed requires no agricultural land, no fresh water and no pesticides. To become fibre, sodium alginate is extracted from raw seaweed. It is breathable, biodegradable, compostable, and produces no microplastic pollution at end of life.

Alginate is often used in the medical field in wound dressings, because it is a highly absorbent, biocompatible, and non-toxic natural fiber, all elements that lend themselves perfectly to a fabric worn so close to the body.

Why we chose a rib knit jersey

Rib fabric has natural elasticity and recovery, allowing us to reduce the spandex component but still ensure our knickers hold their shape for many years. A rib is knitted using alternating knit and purl stitches, allowing the fabric to stretch easily across the body and bounce back to its original shape, preventing sagging or bagging out over time. We want to ensure the fit you love stays the same over time. The fabric is able to conform closely to your body like a gentle hug and offer support without pinching, rolling or constricting your natural movement.

The raised vertical ridges allow for tiny air pockets, creating space for airflow against the skin to regulate temperature and remain cool. The structure is able to resist wear and distortion better than most flat knits, allowing it to hold up to frequent daily wear and washing. It creates the ideal blend of comfort and durability.
